Over centuries, from ancient civilizations to modernity, people have gathered to drum in drum “circles” with others from the community. It can include people of all ages and skill levels. The main objective is to share rhythm and get in tune with each other. Drum circles are the world’s oldest team-building activity, as they form a single group consciousness in a short period of time. The synergistic rhythmic entrainment creates a collective voice, as it naturally emerges from the group when each person’s individual voice connects with the whole.
Drum Circles are an ancient technique of healing on many levels. Some modern studies have attested to the power of the facilitated drum circle. Studies have shown that drumming accelerates physical healing, boosts the immune system, and produces feelings of well-being.
This activity emphasizes the use of African Djembes, supported by the use of Tom-Toms and Boomwhackers* as minor percussion.
No drumming ability required! Through the use of various Call and Response exercises as well as phonetic hand drumming drills (“Yum Yum! Tastes like Chicken”, “I like to Dance…Yes You Do!”) the group will be able to master a number of Rhythms and even allow certain daring individuals to try their chance at the Djembe Solo Hot Seat! All participants will cycle through all instruments so everyone will be challenged to learn several percussion parts in little time.
Ideal for groups of 30 or less, this activity is led by our Master Percussionist, Kenny Metzger who also happens to be a classically trained percussionist as well.
Our Power of Percussion African Drum Circle is fun, engaging and creates true team synergy.
*Boomwhackers are plastic cylinders of varying lengths which produce not only a percussive sound but are tuned to a Musical scale. This gives the ensemble the freedom to create melody to complement the drumming!
